Initial experiments for Gin brief

The main part of my Gin brief is to design a typeface to be used as the main part of the identity of a specialist gin bar. To start with I decided to work on the main logo, as this needs to be really strong. Once I have nailed that, the other words (such as signage) can follow the same typographic pattern.
Initially I researched in a couple of typography books and experimented with lots of different ways to create the letter "g". I worked with the name 'The gin palace' - kind of as a working title while I worked on the type designs as I am not settled on a name yet.

I then tried some indian ink experiments. I want the logo to have a hand rendered appeal to it, to make it friendly and appear slightly old fashioned like the themes to which the bar is centred on. However, I felt that these were just too messy and did not give the right aesthetic. I eventually developed a more regimented style that combines a mix of contrasting heavy and light weight lines.
