8 live briefs featuring illustration, promotion and typeface design.

As I opted out of working on the year books, I felt that I needed to make sure that I worked on as many live briefs as possible. My long term goal is to become successful as a freelance illustrator, so I tried to complete a range of illustration briefs, but I also worked on some design briefs and a type design brief.  Some were paid, some were not. I think that the range of different kinds of brief was really good for me in terms of experience. I had mainly positive experiences working on these briefs, particularly the illustration ones. I found that both the Palladio invite brief and the Hush house flyers and posters brief involved a lot more alterations from the client than I had anticipated, and although I am not necessarily pleased with the end result, the client was satisfied. 

I really enjoyed creating the film credits typeface as it gave me the opportunity to create a functioning font on fontographer and learn this skill to an extent which is something I have been wanting to do.

I was skeptical about taking on the Bruisyard brief so late in the term and so close to hand in, but it gave me good experience in negotiating my own deadlines with the client in order that it suit me and fit in with hand in. I requested that I be briefed straight away so that I could start work immediately and get the illustrations signed off at least a week before hand in, and this all worked out fine.

Crit feedback and action plan

I found the crit useful today in terms of answering some questions I have in relation to the briefs. Preparing questions and going through my blogs last night really paid off I think in terms of getting some relevant feedback. I have made an action plan and colour coded it in terms of priority....

Short film credits

My client sent me some screen grabs of the typeface I designed him in the context of the credits roll.....

First experiment with the font

I generated the font just so I could try it out.

The kerning, tracking needs a lot of work, however I like the overal aesthetic and I think that it suits the requirements of being 'hand rendered'. I have sent these samples to the client so he can give me some general feedback before I progress with it any further. 

Type face - Live brief

I got a live brief through off the back of a piece of work I did on my placement at Jelly. The brief is to create a usable typeface for the credits on a short film for a 3rd year DFGA student. There is also the possibility of selling them the font as part of their personal identity.

The type he picked out form my website was the word 'celebrating' seen here below :

The reason I wanted to collaborate on this brief is that I have not yet made a full usable font on Fontographer so would like to gain this experience whilst I can still seek help from tutors and have the time to experiment with new software.

The typeface is based on Gil Sans and is completely hand drawn. The client specifically wants a hand drawn aesthetic which is why he is opting for a customised font rather than using a standard one.

I found a good tutorial to start me off. At first I found the software quite frustrating but as I got going it became easier.

Brief/Session/Document Title Credits Typeface
Brief
Design a font using Fontographer that can be used for the credits for a short film created by a 3rd year Digital Film, Games and Animation student. The typeface could also function as the basis of the visual identity for the client’s brand.
Background / Considerations
The film has a light hearted and comic tone of voice, so the typeface should reflect this. For the credits only a certain amount of glyphs are required, however the typeface should be expanded to include a whole range of glyphs and other symbols.

Initial design board sent to client

As I start my placement on Monday for two weeks, I wanted to get on with this brief right away as the client would ideally like the work in the next couple of weeks. I explained that I have a placement and my spare time could be limited, which she is fine with. I created this design board to send her just to get some initial feedback and establish whether I am on the right lines. Awaiting feedback!

Name variations

The client asked me to come up with some names for 

the character to help give it character. I brainstormed some names beginning 

with 'O' (for owl) with an upper class association to them.

The three I felt worked best were these three :

Facial expressions

I felt concerned that the facial expression on the owl 

is too sombre/moody/serious - so I experimented with eyebrows, dimples and

smiles to see how I could suggest another facial expression.....

Design development

I think that the texture of the notebook 

works well as part of the illustration.

I scanned in some watercolour painting

 experiments and then used them 

to create areas of texture....

I used colours that reflected the colours 

of the website. I created a gold colour 

to use for the feet, beak and pocket watch 

to add some definition to this areas.

I decided that it works better 

when it's slightly muted :
