VALENTINES RANGE BOARDS

(See submission disk or click here to see these boards)

Applied custom lettering, image and identity across a range of printed media.

This brief started as brief form Tigerprint which I really wanted to continue. I liked how the brief was challenging me to create designs that are more versatile for both a male and female audience. I also liked having the opportunity to write my own editorial. I think that the designs were successful and I think it was really valuable and also interesting to research all of the various processes and appropriate stocks involved in producing a range such as this. It think in terms of deliverables, I tried to be adventurous in terms of Marks and Spencer, but I think I could have explored some more proposals.

Marks & Spencers online shop research

Feedback from final crit

The final crit was really helpful as I managed to get so much feedback on my three sets of boards. There were a few layout related suggestions which I am determined to finish by the end of tomorrow, appart from the gin project which I will complete tonight so that I can print during my DC poster print session tomorrow afternoon if there is time.

Types of greetings cards

Standard Greeting Cards: A standard greeting card is printed on high-quality paper (such as card stock), and is rectangular and folded, with a picture or decorative motif on the front. Inside is a pre-printed message appropriate for the occasion, along with a blank space for the sender to add a signature or handwritten message. A matching envelope is sold with the card. Some cards and envelopes feature fancy materials, such as gold leaf, ribbons or glitter.

Photo Greeting Cards: In recent years, photo greeting cards have gained widespread popularity and come in two main types. The first type are photo insert cards in which a hole has been cut in the center. Your photo slides in just like a frame. The second type are printed photo cards in which the photo is combined with artwork and printed, usually on a high-end digital press, directly onto the face of the card. Both types are most popular for sending holiday greetings such as Christmas, Hanukkah & for baby showers.

Personalised Greeting Cards: Websites using special personalisation technology, such as Moonpig, allow consumers to personalise a card which is then printed and sent directly to the recipient.

Musical Greeting Cards: Recently greeting cards have been made that play music or sound when they are opened. They are commonly 3D handmade birthday cards which play traditional celebration songs such as Happy Birthday To You.

Electronic Greeting Cards: (also called E-cards) Greeting cards can also be sent electronically. Flash-based cards can be sent by email, and many sites such as Facebook enable you to send greetings. More recently, services have launched which enable you to send greetings to a mobile phone by text message. Many of these electronic services offer open or anonymous chat, to enable further discussion.

Pop up Cards: Pop up Cards are normally cards that, once opened, have a picture coming outward that then giving it a surprise to the reader, giving it a 'pop out' effect. They are the most sophisticated cards that can be easily made at home.

Crit feedback and action plan

I found the crit useful today in terms of answering some questions I have in relation to the briefs. Preparing questions and going through my blogs last night really paid off I think in terms of getting some relevant feedback. I have made an action plan and colour coded it in terms of priority....

First photography session

This morning I spent some time sketching out all of my photographs so that I could make maximum use of the time that I have available in the photography session.

Robyn and I spent 4 and a half hours photographing our work today which was much longer than I had anticipated it taking! Which is why I am glad that I have staggered the sessions slightly. I got all of my completed work completed leaving only a few odds and sods to photograph next week, along with re-takes from this week should there be any.

Research visit Harvey Nicks

I know its probably a bit late in the day for research visits, but as I'm still designing some of my deliverables for my valentines range, I felt I needed a refresh of whats out there in terms of valentines/high end gifting. I love the Harvey Nichols as it offers some really luxurious and unusual packaging and product designs - as well as some delicious and exciting foods!

I got some inspiration for my valentines gifting...

And also for my Gin brief. With the royal wedding last year getting so much media attention, and with the Queens Jubilee and the Olympics in London this year, there has been a surge of interest for all things British, and it certainly seems that Gin is one of them! There was a huge full table display of all the "British" themed products they have in at the moment including a lot of gin based gifting....

Feedback Tutorial

Personal notes :

Boards - make sure there is one board for each of the briefs that fully explains the project (i.e. impact board)

Don't need to mock EVERYTHING up - e.g. Kit Cat's brief - not all the stationary, maybe just mock up on photoshop and then make a couple of the items to show the process.

Make some development Issuu boards to document all my blogging in a succinct way - easier to mark for the tutors.

Design boards - perhaps in time for crit.

Book project - not necessarily Waterstones as the point of sale, perhaps smaller book fair type thing.

Create one or two more iphone themes for book brief.

Regional expression app - function - perhaps you type in a phrase and then it gives you a list of different regional phrases.

Valentines - gadgets or other gifts for men?

7 Live briefs - make sure each one is a strong impact board and is branded appropriately so it is clear each one is separate.

More valentines gifting ideas...

Ribbons

I am designing some ribbons for part of my valentines gifting, some to be purchased and perhaps some as part of the packaging for the range. I have found a place in Leicestershire that does really quick in house printing for a very reasonable price. I spoke on the phone to a woman from the company who quoted me up to £1.99 for a metre sample using the most expensive choices of ribbon and ink.
The files have to be vector for best results. She also offered me the option of free smaller samples if I send a stamped addressed envelope. I dont think that the quality of these ribbons will be tip top but I think as a proposal it will do the job.

Valentines range research

I have been trying to identify a range of gifts and gifting accessories for the Valentines range I am developing. I am looking at more traditional gifts as well as more contemporary ones. So far my possible deliverables are :

Cards
Wrap (and appropriate packaging to carry brand)
Gift bags
swing tags
ribbons
stickers (for wrapping or other)
phone cases/skins
chocolates
chocolate bar
sweets
macarons
champagne/wine
candles
grow your own flowers
bath salts
bubble bath
soap
cupcakes
perfume
keyring

I think that macarons make a really interesting up market but colour infused gift that could appeal to a younger consumer. I found this set which I think embodies the kind of size and aesthetic I have in mind.

A lot of the gifts on http://www.lamaisoncouture.com/ are the kinds of gifts I have in mind. As the target audience is the 18- 30 year old Marks and Spencers consumer, I think that a less tacky higher end style of gift is most suitable, but with a contemporary edge.
